AC Installation: Residential Fire Protection

Every summer one topic comes up frequently amongst the staff of And Services — the wildfires that ravage the southwest. Our hearts go out to families that lose their homes, and we are also affected by the amount of wild land that is lost each year. This summer the conversation was brought home when we considered the effects of fires on our customers in Hillsborough County. We speak a lot about the sizing requirements and efficiency of HVAC systems, but we rarely have the chance to educate our customers about the guidelines for HVAC contractors in preventing residential fires. And Services stands above the competition because we not only value your business, but also your family and home.

NFPA® 90B 2015 Edition

The HVAC system is guided by federal, state and local regulations as well as best practices. One of the guides that And Services uses is NFPA® 90B 2015 Edition. “NFPA®” stands for the National Fire Protection Association, a non-profit organization that was established in 1896 to take steps towards “eliminating death, injury, property and economic loss due to fire, electrical and related hazards.” NFPA® 90B is the organization’s Standard for the Installation of Warm Heating and Air-Conditioning Systems.

What is Covered by NFPA® 90B?

NFPA® 90B covers the installation, maintenance, construction and operation of systems that are used for heating and cooling, such as ducts, filters and other equipment. The standard applies to any system that moves environmental air in:

  • Spaces less than 25,000 square feet
  • Buildings over three stories tall
  • One or two-family homes

Systems that are included in the standard are:

  • Ventilation and AC systems that are integrated with building construction
  • Acceptance testing
  • Air distribution, HVAC systems and components
  • Manual controls, smoke detection, wiring, smoke dampers and other controls

Licensed HVAC Contractors and NFPA® 90B

As a reputable, licensed HVAC contractor in Florida, And Services adheres to NFPA® 90B when we perform any and all HVAC services including:

  • AC installation and replacement
  • AC maintenance
  • AC repairs
  • Duct work repair and replacement
  • Heater repair and replacement

How Do I Know If My HVAC Contractor Followed NFPA® 90B?

We understand that as a homeowner you sometimes learn as you go. If you were not aware of NFPA® 90B standards when you had your AC system installed, maintained or repaired, we can help. Contact us to schedule a convenient time for one of our technicians to come to your home. We will inspect your HVAC system to determine compliance with NFPA® 90B and other federal, state and local regulations, including State of Florida law, manufacturer compliance standards and other regulations. If we determine that your HVAC system does not any of the requirements, including fire protection, we will recommend repairing or upgrading the system. In some cases, our technicians determine that the expense of the upgrades and repairs far exceed the benefits. In these cases, we will recommend a new AC system. Our technician will determine the right size AC unit for your home, and our sales staff will help you find a system that fits your budget.
