Winterizing Your Air Conditioning System

As winter approaches, you might be looking forward to spending the holidays with family and relishing in the cooler temperatures.  Before the chill sets in, though, you need to take some time to make sure your air conditioning nice and cozy.  Here are some steps that you can take before your schedule gets too busy to make sure that your air conditioning system is ready in the Spring.

Turn Off the Outdoor Unit

Modern air conditioning systems have circuits near the outdoor unit.  In most systems, the circuit is located under a metal or plastic covering.  The switch works like the circuit breakers inside your home.  Turning the unit off at the outdoor circuit keeps it from running during the winter should we have higher than normal temperatures.

Clean the Area Around Your Outdoor Unit

You should remove any twigs, leaves, bushes, debris and clutter from the area around your outdoor air conditioning unit.  If you have bushes or shrubs, make sure you trim them at least six inches from your unit.  Taking the time to clean around the unit prevents rust and clogged vents and lines.  Keeping the area open also discourages critters from making a nice, cozy little home in and around the air conditioner.

Rinse the Outdoor Unit with Plain Water

Remove any dust, bird droppings, dirt, dead insects and other types of debris from the unit by gently rinsing it with a hose.  Do not use any type of detergent to clean the unit.  You should allow the unit to dry completely before covering it with a tarp or plywood.

Use Foam Pipe Covers

Foam pipe covers insulate the pipes during the cold temperatures.  You should be able to find foam pipe material at a local hardware store.  The foam comes in standard sizes that can be cut to fit the diameter and length of your pipes.

Check the Outdoor Unit During the Winter

During the winter, check your outdoor unit to make sure that it is properly covered.  You should also check for any signs of damage.  If you find any signs that your air conditioning system needs repairs, we will send a technician over right away!
